Dear Friends,
We, The World is a non-profit organization that connects individuals
and organizations globally to build mass public involvement in creating
a peaceful, caring, sustainable world.
Last September We, The World launched Interdependence Day at
the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development. This year
Co-Sponsors' Interdependence Day celebrations and activities took place in Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, India, Budapest, the United States,
Canada, England, South Africa, Taiwan and elsewhere!
We are on our way to seeing international acceptance of Interdependence
Day as a time for celebration, information and action in recognition
of our global interdependence!
The food we eat, the products and services we buy, the companies we
work with, the investments we make, the energy we use, the media we choose
or create (including emails!), the political candidates we support - all
affect people and other life around the world.
And wherever people's needs are not met, the resulting conflict, fundamentalism
or terrorism affects all of us directly.
INTERDEPENDENCE DAY VISION
In proclaiming Interdependence Day, we acknowledge the evident: that
all life is connected. When one thread in the web of life is sundered,
all are diminished. This tightly woven web of life inherently includes
all that is organic and inorganic in a stunning dance of mutuality and
support. Where equity and mutual respect prevail, all benefit. -Ruth
Meitin Garbus (Governing Board Member of We, The World and of The Foundation
for Ethics and Meaning; Co-Director of the Center for Community and Dialogue;
former Director, New York Women of Vision and Action)
The main Interdependence Day celebration took place September 12th with involvement by Kofi Annan,
Vaclav Havel, former Senator Gary Hart and other distinguished
participants (see below). However, there were many other Interdependence
Day events throughout September as well (see below).
And We, The World convened a United Nations Videoconference
in recognition of Interdependence Day. It was a special Educating
for Peace and Sustainability Youth Videoconference on September 19th
with Dr. Jane Goodall for the UN International Day of Peace.
(See
We,
The World Videoconference Series - Building Peace and Security in the 21st

Interdependence
Day 2002
A look at Last Year's Launch
by We, The World
The Opening Ceremony took place September 1, 2002 at the Sacred Site in Ubuntu Village, Johannesburg South Africa during the World Summit on Sustainable Development:
Convocation Circle of Interdependence Led
by Inuit Elder Angaangaq Lyberth and Mayan Spiritual Leaders Mercedes Longfellow and Gerardo Barrioro in associations with Tribal Link Foundation. Other participants included Diane Williams and Pamela Kraft, with assistance by Monica Willard.
It was a moving celebration of the heart and spirit of all the peoples of the world and their interconnectedness with the rest of nature. There were chants, a beautiful candle ceremony and personal testimony to the interdependence of our global community and the responsibility that goes with it.

How do we transform age-old challenges
with new thinking and strategies to build secure societies? There is a
growing awareness that a paradigm shift will be required which recognizes
the essential role of spirituality, values and silence in addressing pressing
global concerns. Peace, respect, security and dignity depend on both inner
and outer changes. This program will explore ways the soul of humanity
can be more purposively engaged in addressing global concerns by tapping
into the infinite wisdom and capabilities of humanity to transform consciousness
and conditions for the benefit of all.

The Share the Spirit of Peace Youth Summit, honoring the International
Day of Peace, will begin in New York at the United Nations on September
19, 2003. The Summit will culminate with the youth raising their countryıs
flag at the World Peace Prayer Festival on Sunday September 21, 2003. (see
www.worldpeace.org). The fourth Summit will be in London early 2004, followed
by Peace Summits in Geneva, Darjeeling and Tokyo.
The primary focus of the Global Peace Summits is a shared vision of
Peace, including the proposal for a national Department of Peace, as presented
by Dennis Kucinich as HR Bill 2459 in the U.S. Congress, and the Earth
Charter, a global document promoting peace and sustainability.
Let us summon the courage to Share the Spirit of Peace - to make a difference
in our own lives and to help to bring more light into dark places everywhere.
Let us offer young people the opportunity to learn and to teach the way
of Peace. Together, let us live a Culture of Peace. |

The International Day of Peace
September 21, 2003
http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org
Peace Begins With Ourselves, Living In Harmony With One Another
And With The Earth.
The International Day of Peace (IDP) provides an opportunity for individuals,
organizations and nations to create practical acts of Peace on a shared
date. Use the International Day of Peace annually to highlight the International
Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World,
2001 to 2010.
Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International
Day of Peace was first celebrated in September 1982.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Plan a local event. Use schools, places of worship, libraries, parks,
or municipal buildings to host events. Use the day to build partnerships
within your community. Involve children. (www.internationaldayofpeace.org).
Incorporate prayer and meditation into your plans. Join with others
to create a global International Day of Peace Vigil (www.idpvigil.com).
Join people throughout the world in one minute of silence (or more!)
this Day, and at NOON every day, in our common commitment to Peace. (http://www.worldpeaceforaday.org)
Ring a bell, light a candle for Peace. Have bells ring to end Minute
of Silence @ 12:01 everywhere!
Promote media attention for the Day. UN General Assembly Resolution
A/55/282 (www.un.org/events/peaceday) (www.un.org/documents/ga/res/55/a55r/282.pdf).

wherever you are! Over the coming days set aside a specific time in recognition
of Interdependence Day to gather with family, friends, co-workers,
activists, community groups or others in a place of worship, school or
other community setting, to discuss and act on ideas such as:
-
How do we depend on each other and the web of life for our survival?
-
What are the responsibilities of individuals, businesses, governments
and civil society to insure the health and well-being of all?
-
What actions are you willing to take to make a positive contribution
to all life on our planet? Examples range from meditating for peace, planting
a tree, attending a peace march, to organizing an international movement
to fund and expedite the global transition to renewable non-polluting energy
sources! All are important!
If you decide to have a gathering in recognition of Interdependence
Day, please let us know and we will include your event on the Calendar
and website.
