OVERVIEW
The mission of Our Voices, Our World (OVOW) is to empower local & global movements by increasing public participation in initiatives for peace, sustainability and transformation, focusing especially on youth. OVOW is an ongoing multi-city event series
that combines music, other arts presentations, video, dynamic speakers,
and ways to take action and get involved with ongoing campaigns of the
co-sponsoring organizations.
Events will be held approximately every 3 months (to start) in major
cities and towns throughout the US, as well as globally. For larger events,
the Primary Event Locations will be video-linked together, webcast and
broadcast to a global audience.
OVOW events will address a wide variety of issues that fall under broader themes such as:
-
Building a Culture of Peace
-
Protecting the Environment
-
Promoting Public Interest Media and the Arts
-
Ending Poverty and the Fulfillment of Human Needs such as Affordable Housing,
Living Wage, and Sustainable Development
-
Building Communities of Empowerment (Women, Youth, Indigenous Peoples),
Protecting Civil Rights
-
Personal Health and Societal Health, and
-
Green Business for a Green Planet.
Many of the events will coincide with important dates and anniversaries
such as Earth Day, V Day, May Day, the Stonewall Anniversary, and Gandhi's
and Martin Luther King's birthdays. The larger events will include videolinking
between cities and countries
OBJECTIVES
Key event objectives are:
-
To ignite public - especially youth - interest and involvement
-
To generate mass support for organizations, businesses and coalitions whose
practices are beneficial to people and the planet
-
To increase pressure and action regarding current critical situations such
as natural or human-generated disasters, habitat/species destruction, upcoming
legislation, negotiation breakdowns between clashing national or cultural
groups, and protection of civil rights
-
Voter Registration
The OVOW series will utilize a continuing media campaign between events
with public service ads and talk show appearances by visionary thinkers,
artists, authors, activists, celebrities, and others.
OPERATING MODELS/PROCEDURES/METHODS
OVOW will start out with five full-time and five part time organizers,
and a full complement of interns and volunteers working in New York and
San Francisco. As new chapters are added this will increase. NY and SF
organizers will work with event organizers (artists, activists and promoters)
in US cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco
and other countries such as Canada, Australia, Taiwan and South Africa.
Our plans are to expand to many other major US cities and college towns/State
Universities (where there are thriving music scenes) and eventually smaller
cities.
All events will be theme-based music concerts that include video and
other arts presentations, and are interspersed with dynamic speakers, preferably
interactive with the audience. Between the "headliner" performers, if the
major draw artists are willing, some events may have a panel consisting
of the main speakers and the headlining performers to give added focus
to the issue or cause at hand.
We plan to implement ways to eventually hold events more frequently
(monthly, bi-monthly, eventually weekly) in smaller capacity venues. These
events will use innovative, lo-fi ways to raise consciousness such as "Book
Jams" where books that address the concert theme could be promoted with
postcard/book-mark hand-outs and, if publishers and authors agree, free
book giveaways. In addition, articles and essays by such influential writers
as Jared Diamond and Naomi Klein can be handed out and displayed on tables;
and alternative media in the public interest will be promoted, i.e. websites,
radio, news and television programs, documentary films, etc.
Besides music, other arts presentations, and speakers, events will include
exhibit areas for the co-sponsoring organizations and socially responsible
business sponsors. To facilitate immediate cause-related involvement by
attendees, some events will include We, The World's special "cyber action
centers" in the exhibit area. These will link event participants to toll-free
action hotline numbers, faxes and email list-serves routed to the appropriate
government officials, diplomats, media outlets or corporations. By sending
messages, making calls, signing petitions and mailing letters, young people
and others at these events will have a direct experience of making a difference.
Followup Events: Meet the Artists and Speakers, Become an Agent
for Change
These local events take place within 2 weeks after the concert event.
They feature some or all of the speakers and/or performers from the concert.
They are designed to cover the issue or theme in a more in-depth way. They
can combine performance and talk but will have more focus on problem solving
and taking action. They will take place at Community Centers, Schools,
Independent Book Stores, Coffee Shops and other such venues.
EVALUATION
After each OVOW event we will assess the extent to which we are achieving
our objectives. We will look at:
-
How many people attend each event?
-
How many new people sign up with the co-sponsoring organizations and with
us?
-
How many take part in the coordinated civic actions?
-
How much press coverage was there?
-
How many people attend the followup event(s)?
-
Were funds generated beyond expenses?
-
How many people registered to vote?
